Great news! Thank you President @BarackObama for continuing to protect our planet. #Regram #RG @protectbearsears: BREAKING: President Obama protects #BearsEars! Today, the president used the #AntiquitiesAct to designate the Bears Ears National Monument in a historic action to preserve #NativeAmerican culture and add to our country’s legacy of honoring America’s shared history. The new national monument - the result of a proposal from an unprecedented coalition of Tribal Nations - will safeguard more than 100,000 cultural sites, world-class outdoor recreation opportunities, and an incredible natural landscape for generations to come. #MonumentsForAll #StandWithBearsEars @whitehouse @usinterior @usdagov @mypubliclands

#Regram #RG @nytimes: In the Fall, polar bears are everywhere around Kaktovik, an Arctic village home to 260 people. They doze on sand spits, roughhouse in the shallows, pad down the beach and attract hundreds of tourists. At night, the bears sneak into town, staying until the #polarbear patrol chases them off. On the surface, these animals might not look like members of a species facing possible extinction. Many seem healthy and plump — especially in the early fall, when their presence overlaps with the Inupiat village’s whaling season. But the bears in Kaktovik are #climaterefugees, on land because the sea ice they need to hunt seals is receding. The Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the planet, and the ice cover is retreating at a pace that startles even those who predicted the decline. Now, bears like this one are going into the winter skinnier, smaller and in poorer condition. In Kaktovik, at least for now, whales are providing alternative source of food. But dead whale is not a polar bear’s preferred cuisine. @joshhaner took this photo while on #nytassignment in Alaska. Visit the link in our profile to read more.

When 'Cecil - the Lion’ was killed, Swedish explorer and adventure activist Johan Ernst Nilson decided to make a change. He hired a group of ex-poachers to cross Serengeti in Tanzania to track down the poachers. Johan and his team hiked among animals like lions, rhinos and elephants for 500 km and managed to destroy 88 traps to save endangered animals in Africa. The project was called 'Not a walk in the park'. Photo: Filip Cederholm @johanernst #adventureactivist #notawalkinthepark #serengeti #stoppoaching

#Regram #RG @pedromcbride: Just a few feet above the high tide: That is all that separates these amazing atolls in the Tuamotu Archipelago deep in the South Pacific from the ocean around them. As the seasons change under the unpredictability of a changing climate, I often think of my friends living in these ocean paradises — and the potential future they face without their atolls as sea levels rise. #aerial #tbt #oceans #climatechange #frenchpolynesia

#Regram #RG @everydayclimatechange: Photo by Georgina Goodwin @ggkenya for @everydayclimatechange. This image of an Amhara boy and his horse in barren fields that should be full of wheat and teff was taken in Wollo 600kms north of Ethiopia's capital Addis in 2008 when the entire region suffered major drought as both the years' rains failed. Ethiopia continues to face the same issues of failed rains and are currently suffering the worst drought in 30 years exacerbated by the El Ni?o phenomenon. A recent climate change study in the Horn of Africa finds that the land is drying out at an unusually fast pace as a result of soaring greenhouse gas emissions. Associate professor at the University of Arizona and lead author of the study Jessica Tierney said in a statement in the IBTimes, "Given the scale of threats in Africa and across the world, studying the hyper-local impacts of climate change will be critical to helping communities adapt and prepare". In a country where more than eight in ten people depend on rain-fed agriculture, the drought is having a significant impact and the Ethiopian government estimates that more than 9 million people will need humanitarian assistance in 2016. #climatechange #globalwarming #everydayclimatechange #ethiopia #documentary #photojournalism #climate #visualsoflife #ethiopia #GlobalClimateChange2015 #News #environment #famine

#Regram #RG @na******eotravel: Photo by @FransLanting // This polar bear mother and its cub appear to be in good condition. They’ve developed thick winter coats that will keep them warm during the months ahead, but changing ice conditions in the Arctic are posing huge challenges to their survival. Polar bears need sea ice—that’s where they hunt for seals. And every year the extent of the Arctic’s sea ice cap is shrinking. How much longer before we reach a tipping point? #Regram #RG @amazonwatch: The Kichwa community of Sarayaku in Ecuador live in close harmony with their Amazon rainforest home. But explosives left on their territory during oil exploration by a private company put them in harms way, and new oil concessions further threaten them and their rainforest home. Today, Sarayaku leaders took their case to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, denouncing the government's noncompliance with a 2012 Court ruling ordering it to work with the community to remove the explosives and to thoroughly consult with them before issuing any new concessions.

Great news from an #LDF project in Sumatra w/ partner @World_Wildlife. #Regram #RG @World_Wildlife: One of the last great stands of rain forest in the deforestation hotspot of the Indonesian island of Sumatra has welcomed an exciting new addition: a baby female orangutan. The infant is the first orangutan born in the Thirty Hills conservation concession since WWF and its partners began managing the 100,000-acre forest in 2015. Violet, one of dozens of orangutans reintroduced into Bukit Tigapuluh National Park—a region commonly known as Thirty Hills—is the new mother, and both mom and baby appear healthy. The Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS), an international conservation organization committed to preserving wild lands and animals, has worked to reintroduce orangutans like Violet into Thirty Hills since 2001. Most of the orangutans were rescued from the illegal pet trade and placed in the society’s ‘jungle school.’ There, they learned the skills they need to survive before heading into the wild. Around 160 orangutans now live in Thirty Hills.
