#Regram #RG @aljazeeraenglish: “This is climate chaos - what it actually looks like.” - Tim Gore, Oxfam’s climate policy leader.⠀ .⠀ Oxfam has found that people were three times more likely to be displaced by cyclones, floods or fires than by conflicts.⠀ .⠀ Here are some facts that show how it's mostly poor nations that are paying the price for climate chaos:⠀ .⠀ 1. In Cuba , nearly 5% of the population has been displaced annually by extreme weather | : Adalberto Roque, @afpphoto⠀ .⠀ 2. In Guatemala , a six-year drought has devastated crops, bringing poverty and hunger | : Marvin Recinos, @afpphoto⠀ .⠀ 3. In 2018, 3.6% of Somalia’s population were newly displaced by extreme weather events and 3.9% were newly displaced by conflict | : Feisal Omar, @reuters⠀ .⠀ 4. The Philippines tops the list of countries where people are most at risk of displacement as a result of conflict and extreme weather disasters | : Erik de Castro, @reuters⠀ .⠀ 5. In Pakistan , repeated droughts and cyclones between 1999 and 2012 resulted in the forced displacement of entire communities. | : Muhammed Muheisen, @apnews⠀ .⠀ 6. After the cyclone in Mozambique , displaced women often lacked information on their legal rights | : Zohra Bensemra, @reuters⠀ .⠀ 7. Small island developing states such as Tuvalu face the highest risk of internal displacement as a result of extreme weather events | : Dave Hunt-Pool, @gettyimages⠀ .⠀ 8. The vast majority – around 80% – of those displaced live in Asia. A single event, Cyclone Fani, triggered the displacement of nearly 3.5 million people in Bangladesh and India in May 2019 | : @apnews⠀ .⠀ 9. Storms - regular in Sri Lanka - are becoming more destructive as warmer waters contribute to higher maximum wind speeds and more rainfall | : Ishara S. Kodikara, @afpphoto⠀ .⠀ 10. Cyclone Idai, which hit Zimbabwe this year, mostly affected communities in rural areas with poor road infrastructure and housing. | : Zinyange Aunthony, @afpphoto⠀ .⠀ Read our article with more of Oxfam’s findings in the link in our bio.⠀ .⠀ #weather #climate

#Regram #RG @cnnclimate: In the past decade, climate-fueled disasters have forced about 20 million people a year to leave their homes — equivalent to one every two seconds — according to a new report from Oxfam. People are seven times more likely to be displaced by floods, cyclones and wildfires than volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, and three times more likely than by conflict, according to the report released Monday. Oxfam, a nonprofit that is working to end poverty, is calling on world leaders to reduce emissions as fast as possible, and asking the international community to do more to fund recovery programs for poorer countries affected by the climate emergency. #Regram #RG @wmo_omm: Levels of heat-trapping greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have reached a new record high. This continuing long-term trend means that future generations will be confronted with increasingly severe impacts of climate change, including rising temperatures, more extreme weather, water stress, sea level rise and disruption to marine and land ecosystems. Today we released the Greenhouse Gas Bulletin which showed that globally averaged concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) reached 407.8 parts per million in 2018, up from 405.5 parts per million in 2017.

At this time of crisis for the Amazon, I support the people of Brazil working to save their natural and cultural heritage. They are an amazing, moving and humbling example of the commitment and passion needed to save the environment. The future of these irreplaceable ecosystems is at stake and I am proud to stand with the groups protecting them. While worthy of support, we did not fund the organizations targeted. I remain committed to supporting the Brazilian indigenous communities, local governments, scientists, educators and general public who are working tirelessly to secure the Amazon for the future of all Brazilians.

#Regram #RG @cnnclimate: The amount of land affected by an oil spill in North Dakota is almost 10 times larger than initially reported, officials say. TC Energy, the company that owns the Keystone 1 Pipeline, shut it down on October 29 after discovering more than 383,000 gallons of oil had leaked from the pipe into surrounding wetlands. Initial reports from TC Energy and and North Dakota’s Department of Environmental Quality estimated about 2,500 square yards of land were affected — now they say it’s more than 23,000 square yards. Fresh hope for the Critically Endangered Cuban Crocodile, as @global_wildlife_conservation joins @TheWCS and Cuban partners to release 10 young captive Cuban Crocodiles into the wild. For thousands of years, Cuban Crocodiles thrived in the Zapata Swamp, the largest coastal wetland in the Caribbean Islands, but unchecked hunting decimated their numbers to some 3,000 in the wild today. Not only are these top predators vital for keeping the food chain in check, but they are also important ecosystem engineers that shape and maintain mangrove ecosystems by excavating underwater caves and canals. Today they are threatened by hunting, habitat destruction, and hybridization with American Crocodiles in areas where the two species have been forced into closer proximity. Losing the Cuban Crocodile would have significant repercussions both ecologically and culturally. Fortunately, a captive breeding sanctuary was established in Zapata Swamp in 1959, providing an important reservoir for reestablishing the crocodile in the wild. A dedicated team is now working to bring the Cuban Crocodile back from the brink through a program of reintroduction, monitoring, and education. Follow @global_wildlife_conservation to learn how you can join these efforts. Photos by @robindmoore

“With the images of the rescued animals, we have tried to use the powerful tools of our profession as photographers to foster empathy for our beloved wildlife. We wanted to capture more than just the physical features of the animals—to show their penetrating looks, sometimes grateful, sometimes accusing. We also wanted to show that the same human beings who have the power to destroy wildlife also have the power to rescue and care for them.” – Daniel Alarcón, a photographer helping show the animals rescued in the course of Bolivia’s wildfires. @global_wildlife_conservation @museodorbigny @nativabolivia @pantheracats @oxygenseven (Photos by Daniel Alarcón @danielalarconparquesnacionales and David Grumbaun)

Our leaders are not listening. It’s time to demand climate action. It’s time to build a diverse global mobilization to defend the environment and our future. Next year marks 50 years of Earth Day amid a pivotal moment for the planet. The urgency has never been greater, and the stakes have never been higher – we face mass extinction of species, catastrophic pollution of oceans, destruction of communities and displacement of millions. In short, we are in a climate breakdown. Exactly half a century after the first Earth Day, millions will rise up to demand climate action. On April 22, we #EARTHRISE: Visit earthrise2020.org

#Regram #RG @earthalliance: Thanks in part to your incredible generosity to the Amazon Forest Fund, Instituto Araguaia was able to put out a fire threatening one of the most unique and special places on Earth, Brazil’s Cantão State Park, where the Amazon Rainforest meets the wooded grasslands and savannas of the Cerrado biome and the wetland marshes of the Pantanal.

#Regram #RG @sealegacy: Video by @justinhofman // Alaska. This particular glacier is beautiful, but it's also receding and thinning at a noticeable rate. Although it's not a scientific measurement, all of us guides are noticing dramatic changes in the glaciers of Southeast Alaska over the past few years. In many cases there literally is no science being done to measure the recession because funding is simply not available. What makes it extra difficult is that the people we are taking to these wild places are often seeing this for the first time and are in awe of the raw beauty and power of a glacier. That is the normal and appropriate reaction. But the guides, the ones who have spent years and decades learning and observing these places, see a completely different, alarming scene. #turningthetide #glacier #alaska

#Regram #RG @guardian: Today, with help from leading scientists and NGOs, we can expose the fossil fuel companies most responsible for perpetuating the climate crisis. It's an investigation that's involved more than 20 Guardian journalists working across the world for the past six months. We hope it moves the focus of the debate from individual responsibilities to power structures and presses governments and corporations to close the gap between ambitious long-term promises and lacklustre short-term action. The UN says the coming decade is crucial if the world is going to avoid the most catastrophic consequences of global heating. Reining in our dependence on fossil fuels and dramatically accelerating the transition to renewable energy has never been more urgent. Follow the link in The @guardian’s bio to uncover the investigation and help us spread the word by sharing this post around the #ThePolluters.
