Recent analyses showed that even if the destruction were to end now it would take 5-7 million years for the natural world to recover. Barrett says that there is a link between the food system and depletion of wildlife, explaining that eating less meat is an essential part of reversing losses. “This is actually now jeopardising the future of people. Nature is not a ‘nice to have’ – it is our life-support system.”

It is estimated that orangutans have lost over 80% of their habitat in the last 20 years, largely due to fragmentation from the palm oil and wood pulp industries. @leonardodicapriofdn and the @janegoodallinst have teamed up to develop a line of apparel to raise awareness for ape conservation and support teams on the ground working to save this incredible species. But when climate change helped trigger a 60-fold explosion of purple urchins off Northern California’s coast, the urchins went on a feeding frenzy and the kelp was devoured. “It would be like one of those beautiful deciduous forests turned into a desert,” said Gretchen Hofmann, a professor of marine ecology at the @ucsantabarbara. “But in the matter of 5 years.” The story of the kelp’s disappearance is the story of an interwoven food system breaking down, and in the process threatening people’s livelihoods. Kelp forests exist along the cooler coastlines of every continent but Antarctica.
